A Look into Little Anchors: Onsite Childcare at Anchor Perinatal Wellness

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) affect many birthing people and can have a profound impact on the entire family. Yet, despite the commonality and seriousness of these conditions, support and treatment are often delayed. Many people experiencing PMADs hesitate to seek help for understandable reasons like lack of trust in the medical system, fear or stigma around medication, and feelings of guilt. For many mothers, the simple reality of not having access to affordable childcare creates yet another barrier to getting the care they need and deserve.

Anchor Perinatal Wellness (APW) is committed to removing these barriers and meeting moms where they are. By offering onsite childcare for participants in our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), APW helps ensure that mothers can focus on their healing while knowing their children are cared for in a safe, supportive environment.

We chatted with Ingrid Candor, a certified postpartum doula and infant care specialist, on how she helps to cultivate that safe, supportive environment at Little Anchors, our onsite childcare program.

Can you give us a general overview of the services Little Anchors provides?

Anchor provides a peaceful, supportive space where moms can drop off their baby or babies, knowing they will be cared for by a professional doula. Through this, we offer the first calm step in their healing journeythree hours where they can trust that their little ones are safe, nurtured, and attended to.

"Most importantly, we listen."

We take time to speak with each mom, get to know their needs, learn about their baby’s schedule and routines, and understand how we can best support them. Our goal is to create a compassionate environment that makes them feel seen, understood, and supported during a vulnerable time.

How do you support IOP moms who are breastfeeding?

We welcome breastfeeding moms at any time to come and feed their babies. If their little one becomes hungry, we text them right away. We provide a warm, judgment-free space where they can ask questions, talk through concerns, and feel completely comfortable breastfeeding. Our intention is to support their feeding goals and make the experience as stress-free as possible.

How do you support IOP moms who are struggling with anxiety or feeling challenged by being away from their baby?

I personally welcome each mom, explain what we do, and reassure them that they are always welcome to come in and see their baby. We gather basic information about their baby’s routine, needs, and any allergies, so they feel confident that we understand their child.

Most importantly, we listen. We take time to hear their concerns, validate their feelings, and remind them that their baby is in a safe and nurturing place. If needed, they can stay a little longer before heading to their session. Our goal is to ease their anxiety and help them feel supported every step of the way.

What brought you to this specific role or inspired you to work with this demographic?

I first learned about PMADs during my doula certification, but my understanding deepened when I took a class with Postpartum Support International—honestly, I learned more in that class than I did across all eight of my pregnancies.

As a mom of eight, I know firsthand that motherhood is a journey. It’s healing, it’s challenging, and it comes with many twists and turns. Supporting moms through this season is incredibly meaningful to me. Listening to them, answering questions, watching them grow more confident, and seeing their healing unfold is a privilege. And of course, holding, comforting, and caring for their babies is a very special part of my work. Knowing I can play even a small role in their recovery and empowerment brings me so much joy and purpose.

Final Thoughts

I would just add that it is truly an honor to serve these moms and their babies. Every family that walks through our doors matters to us, and we are committed to offering a safe, gentle, and supportive space where they can breathe, heal, and feel understood. This work is deeply meaningful, and I am grateful to be part of their journey.
